02 May HOTEL DINING FOR HOMELESS ON CHINESE NEW YEAR

Kuala Lumpur, January 28, 2017​ –

The city’s homeless denizens ushered in the Chinese New Year today with a festive feast provided by PARKROYAL Kuala Lumpur’s Si Chuan Dou Hua restaurant.

The celebration, dubbed “JOM CNY”, took place at the half-way house Pusat Transit Gelandangan near Bulatan Pahang from 8.00am till 1.00pm and was organised by NGO Institut Onn Ja’afar (IOJ).

Also present were underprivileged children and non-Chinese student-volunteers from IOJ who served the food and decorated the venue in a Chinese New Year theme.

“This is the third celebration we’ve held here, with the first two taking place during the previous Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali,” said IOJ CEO Charles Mohan.

Charles explained that JOM CNY was an offshoot of IOJ’s JOM BEKPES campaign, a morning soup kitchen which was the brainchild of IOJ’s patron, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

“Through our campaign roughly 1,000 student-volunteers in total from 25 local private and public universities, colleges and student associations have been serving food to the homeless and underprivileged children at three locations at least twice a month since February last year.

“This year, we are expanding our campaign to Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih, a government-run school for 150 impoverished children,” he said.

Charles praised the student-volunteers and sponsors who had shown immense altruism in supporting IOJ’s campaigns.

“We’re really thankful that people have given their time, energy and resources to give hope to our fellow Malaysians who have so little of their own,” he said.

Charles pointed out that IOJ had chosen this venue as the Federal Territories Ministry had set up Pusat Transit Gelandangan as a one-stop centre for the homeless to receive assistance from the government, NGOs and members of the public.

At the same time, he said, Kuala Lumpur City Hall had stepped up to provide the tables, chairs and tents for the event and PARKROYAL Kuala Lumpur has shown great compassion is sharing their food today.

Si Chuan Dou Hua restaurant manager Emily Kang, PARKROYAL Marketing Communications manager Warren Fernandez, Human Resource director Maggie Lee and Human Resource manager Nurulhuda Yahya were also in attendance.

“This is the second time PARKROYAL has joined forces with IOJ to bring joy to the less fortunate as the hotel also provided the food for the Deepavali,” said Warren.

“Most of the people here may otherwise never get to experience the great food we have at our Si Chuan Dou Hua restaurant.

“While PARKROYAL is a luxury hotel chain, we firmly believe that everyone should experience it at least once, especially during big days like Chinese New Year, and providing the food here today is a way for us to reaffirm our commitment to the spirit of giving,” he said.
