05 Jun KDU STUDENTS GIVE OUT SAHUR FOR KL’S HOMELESS

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31, 2017 –

Last night, student-volunteers from KDU University College, as the first institution to take part in this year’s Jom Sahur campaign, handed out pre-fasting meals to the city’s homeless and underprivileged.

“It has always been our long standing mission to give back to the community. Concurrently, educating and empowering our students for this good cause is also in line with KDU’s Youth Empowerment Plan 2017,” said KDU Student and Alumni Centre Senior Manager Mitchell Liong Chee Chiun.

He explained that KDU’s Youth Empowerment Plan 2017 provides a platform for effective learning to transform students from core leaders into adaptive leaders for the future.

The Jom Sahur campaign is being jointly organised by NGOs Institut Onn Ja’afar (IOJ) and Yayasan Chow Kit (YCK) with food provided by Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside Hotel. IOJ CEO Charles Mohan says the weekly sessions of Jom Sahur will be hosted by 40 students from a different college or university serving 370 pax of food to the homeless denizens of Kuala Lumpur.

“Our ‘Jom Sahur’ campaign will take place simultaneously in front of YCK’s KL Krash Pad on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and at Pusat Transit Gelandangan near Bulatan Pahang,” he adds. Charles says the two locations were picked because the first is a gathering for underprivileged children and homeless families in Chow Kit, while the latter is a ‘one stop centre’ by the Federal Territories Ministry for the homeless to receive help and services from not only government agencies, but also from all the NGOs and volunteers.

“This is our second year of Jom Sahur and just as we did last year, we will celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri with the homeless at Pusat Transit Gelandangan,” said Charles.

Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside General Manager and Malaysia Area General Manager Roberts Ejubs says he is delighted to collaborate with IOJ in the Ramadhan season this year.

“It’s our desire to create a better future for all through our CSR activities and programs.

“Being in the hospitality industry it is our privilege to conduct community programs in an effort to create a better world and to make lives of others better,” he added.

He also said that during the festive season, it is very vogue to speak about giving to community projects and to help the homeless in a number of ways and to organise fantastic programs like this.

“I personally feel that it is the social responsibility of every staff of this stunning hotel to give back to the society. This is the real social responsibility that we strive for.

“While we, those who have made it in the world, look forward for the future, we should not forget the less fortunate who without our help struggle in their respective lives. It is our duty and responsibility to help the needy in any way we can. This is why we at Pullman take our social corporate responsibility seriously,” said Ejubs.

Ejubs also says it is part of Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside and the Accor Hotels’ values to organize and collaborate in any charity relationship and partnership. The Jom Sahur campaign is an offshoot of IOJ’s Jom Bekpes campaign which began in February 2016 and itself was the brainchild of IOJ patron Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, who is also Malaysia’s Defence Minister.
