24 Feb Non-chinese volunteers bring Lunar New Year Cheer to homeless
KUALA LUMPUR, February 16, 2018
According to Chinese Astrology, dogs are honest, friendly, faithful, loyal, smart, straightforward, venerable and have a strong sense of responsibility
“It is then fitting that Institut Onn Ja’afar (IOJ) student-Ambassadors and volunteers from Om are celebrating this Chinese New Year by organising an open-house for the homeless and underprivileged,” says IOJ CEO Charles Mohan.
The event, dubbed “JOM CNY”, was held today at one of the city’s homeless halfway houses, Pusat Transit Gelandangan, which was set up by the Federal Territories Ministry as a one-stop centre for members of the public, government and non-government organisations, and companies to provide aid to the homeless.
JOM CNY takes place on the first day of Chinese New Year itself, February 16, from 8.00am till 11.00pm and started with volunteers decorating the venue to set the mood for Chinese New Year.
Pelaburan Mara Berhad stepped forward to sponsor the event, with Gombak Food Delivery Prihatin chipping in to provide drinks and cold treats.
According to Pelaburan MARA Group CEO Datuk Nazim Rahman, Lunar New Year Cheer allows the company to join in the celebration and experience the spirit of festivities the Malaysian way.
“Chinese New Year is all about the celebration of home, family and friends, and we at Pelaburan MARA are certainly honoured to be collaborating this kind of event,“ he adds.
Charles praised the sponsors, adding that IOJ also received help and the cooperation from the Federal Territories Ministry, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, the management of Pusat Transit Gelandangan, and Yayasan Chow Kit.
“Over 250 people have taken part in today’s celebration, including the volunteers, the homeless denizens of Pusat Transit Gelandangan and underprivileged children from the Chow Kit area,” says Charles.
IOJ, of which the patron is Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, has also held “JOM RAYA” for Aidilfitri and “JOM DIWALI” for Deepavali at the same place since February, 2016, as part of its ongoing “JOM BEKPES” morning soup kitchen campaign.
