IOJ launches KL’S first morning soup kitchen
In the early hours of the morning of Feb 17, 2016, Institut Onn Ja’afar (IOJ), in collaboration with Yayasan Chow Kit (YCK), launched Kuala Lumpur’s first ‘morning soup kitchen’ to serve breakfast to the city’s homeless and Chow Kit’s less fortunate kids. Around 80 homeless denizens and 50 less fortunate kids were served nasi lemak, sandwiches and milo so they could start off with the most important meal of the day. The brainchild of IOJ’s patron Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein Onn, JOM BEKPES! is the first early morning ‘soup kitchen’ of its kind in Kuala Lumpur and was held on Feb 17 from 7am till 8.30am in front of KL Krash Pad (Yayasan Chow Kit) at 346, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. However, volunteers began arriving from 6am to prepare the food and drinks that were distributed. Of those who came to take part were 15 volunteers from Kolej Tun Syed Nasir Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), 11 from Universiti Tun Razak (UTR), and one from Universiti Malaya (UM), along with 11 volunteers from YCK and five from IOJ, Also present was a daughter of former Prime Minister Tun Hussein Onn, Hanis Tun Hussein Onn, to represent the family on behalf of Hishammuddin. However, IOJ does not intend to stop after just one meal and plans to invite more of Kuala Lumpur’s homeless and Chow Kit’s less fortunate kids to JOM BEKPES! twice a month during an initial 13-month campaign in collaboration with YCK and private and public universities. Those interested in taking part in future JOM BEKPES! soup kitchens are encouraged to follow and like IOJ’s social media pages for updates.
