“JOM RAYA!” for homeless and underprivileged organised by Institut Onn Ja’afar (IOJ)

KUALA LUMPUR, July 4, 2016:

Institut Onn Ja’afar (IOJ) will hold a Hari Raya open house on July 6, the first day of this coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri, for homeless and underprivileged people in Kuala Lumpur at Pusat Transit Gelandangan on Jalan Pahang.

The event, dubbed “JOM RAYA!”, began as an initiative of IOJ patron Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein Onn.

It will involve some 20 IOJ student-volunteers from SEGI College Kuala Lumpur, of various ethnic and religious backgrounds, sharing traditional Malaysian Hari Raya food with 200 homeless or underprivileged people, also of various ethnic and religious backgrounds.

IOJ CEO Charles Mohan voiced his hopes that homeless people will share in the joy of Hari Raya Aidilfitri as Muslims celebrate the fasting month of Ramadan.

“Through this social responsibility initiative, we intend to help alleviate any feelings of longing or loneliness homeless people may have during the festive season.

“The food we are serving are traditional Hari Raya food such as ketupat, nasi himpit dan rendang as well as Hari Raya treats like biscuits,” he said.

“We believe that by having multiracial students celebrate Hari Raya with the less fortunate in a Malaysian open-house setting, both sides will benefit from the experience of taking part in a cornerstone of Malaysian warmth, culture and unity,” said Charles.

This is the first Hari Raya celebration to be held at Pusat Transit Gelandangan which was formed as a joint initiative by the Federal Territories Minister, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB).

Among others who are already contributing to the JOM RAYA! festivities are The Lost Food Project, an NGO which saves surplus food from supermarkets in Malaysia and places it in the hands of those who need it.

JOM RAYA! bersama warga gelandangan anjuran Institut Onn Ja’afar (IOJ)

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 Julai, 2016:
