KUALA LUMPUR, November 18, 2017 – Institut Onn Ja’afar (IOJ) has launched the Malaysians United Run 2017 (MUR2017) today, in support of underprivileged children in Malaysia. Held at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC), the 5KM charity run attracted over 40,000 participants from 60 colleges and universities.

With a theme of ‘Let’s Light Up our Children’s Future’, the charity run was officiated by the Malaysian Defense Minister and Patron of Institut Onn Ja’afar, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein Onn. In addition to that, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin flagged off the participants of the charity run. Also present during the event was the CEO of Institut Onn Ja’afar, Charles Mohan.

“The Malaysians United Run (MUR) 2017 is a sporting event with a deeper cause – because we believe that every child deserves to live a quality life. It is in line with what IOJ stands for, as we strive to champion a greater cause by uniting society to work together towards a common goal, and encouraging the spirit of volunteerism, especially among the youth. We believe that MUR 2017 will pave the way and inspire other organizations on how they can bring a positive change to the lives of the underserved,” said Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein Onn.

In 2015, the inaugural launch of the Malaysians United Run campaign witnessed over 17,000 student participants. The event was recognized by the Malaysian Book of Records as being part of the Largest Participation of College Students in a Volunteerism Campaign Run.

“We successfully raised funds for five children’s charity homes in 2015. We intend to make an even bigger impact this year, as we will be donating RM250,000 to 50 cases of underprivileged children in Malaysia,” said CEO of Institut Onn Ja’afar, Charles Mohan.

Charles also stated that the funds raised from sponsors such as Sapura, Techtrend and Weststar, among others, would be managed by committees, consisting of representatives from the tertiary institutions such as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and KDU University College.

“Each adoptive committee will manage at least one case, ensuring that the sponsors’ funds are used for the education of the children over a period of one year. This way, all parties will benefit, as the committees gain experience in managing small charity cases, the children are given the attention they need, and sponsors know their funds are being used to the fullest,” enthused Charles.

During the MUR2017, participants were also given an opportunity to be entertained by talented homegrown acts such as Jaclyn Victor, Dayang Nurfaizah, Altimet and Dangerdisko.

MUR2017 is endorsed by Brand Laureate as the Largest Youth Participated Run in Malaysia, which was presented to IOJ on the day of the event.

“Our commitment and dedication in helping the poor and the needy community is beyond race, age, or borders. Through our existing programs and initiatives such as the Jom Bekpes program where our volunteers distribute free breakfast to the homeless community, IOJ strives to not only provide aid within Malaysia, but to be recognised as a global humanitarian organization,” said Datuk Seri Hishammuddin.
