IOJ Spreads Light and Joy for Deepavali

KUALA LUMPUR, November 6, 2018

Institut Onn Ja’afar (IOJ)’s annual Deepavali open house, dubbed Jom Diwali rounded off a joyful day with interactive sessions with homeless denizens at Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s half-way house Pusat Transit Gelandangan, earlier this morning.

Jom Diwali is an open house event for the third year running and it is part of IOJ’s ongoing Jom Bekpes campaign which aims to provide homeless a platform where they could share joyful moments together during the festive season.

“As Deepavali signifies the festival of lights, IOJ wants to bring joy to the lives of the homeless. Through this little initiative, we mobilise 20 student volunteers from Kolej Rahim Kajai, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). They served food to around 250 homeless and entertained them with various musical and cultural performances,” said IOJ CEO, Charles Mohan.

Elaborating further, Charles said: “We want to bring smiles on the face of people who have not being able to celebrate Deepavali and other major cultural festivals since years. They deserve to remember how it feels to be loved and truly cared for.”

“Deepavali is one of the major festivals in the country which must be marked with the nobleness and social service of helping the underprivileged section of the society. We don’t want them to feel left out,” he added.

One of the contributors to the Jom Bekpes campaign in 2018 was Ekuiti Nasional Berhad (Ekuinas), through its CSR, ILTIZAM.
“Ekuinas looks to play a positive and proactive role in society through our Community Enrichment Programme which aims to support communities especially the disadvantaged and underprivileged. The contribution to IOJ for Jom Bekpes throughout 2018 has been very meaningful to us.
“We hope that our assistance has made an encouraging difference to the children and homeless who benefitted. A significant number of our staff also took turns to take part in the weekly programme,” said Hizwani Hassan, Director of Stakeholders’ Interest at Ekuinas.
Pusat Transit Gelandangan Kuala Lumpur was set up as a one-stop centre set up by the Federal Territories Ministry for the government, private sector, non-government organisations and members of the public to provide aid to the homeless.

The food was sponsored by Ekuinas with the support of The Federal Kuala Lumpur and Gombak Food Delivery Prihatin.
